In the five US regions whose prices we checked, the first year of BNI membership costs $948 to $1,248: a one-time application fee of $199 to $299, plus $699 to $999 for 12 months. Meeting room or meal fees come on top, and each chapter sets its own.

Each BNI region is a franchise that publishes its own prices, or none. The figures below come from official BNI regional pages in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia, accessed October 15, 2026.

Key takeaway: Count your hours as well as the fees. Divide the yearly fees, room charges and value of your time by the gross margin on one closed job: the result is the number of closed referrals the chapter must bring you each year to break even.

What BNI is and how a chapter works

Ivan Misner founded BNI in 1985, and its site reports 355,000 members in 11,800 chapters, without dating the figure. A chapter is a group of local business owners who meet every week and pass referrals to each other. Each chapter takes one person per profession, so members don't compete inside the group (BNI, About Us).

BNI's General Policies, published by its Greater Los Angeles region, set the rules for your week (BNI General Policies, PDF):

  • Members arrive on time and stay for the entire published meeting time.
  • A member may miss three meetings in a continuous six-month period. A substitute who attends in your place does not count as an absence.
  • There are no leaves of absence except for medical leave.
  • You can belong to one chapter only, and a member cannot be in any other program that holds members accountable for passing referrals.
  • All new members must complete the Member Success Program.

The chapter's membership committee enforces these rules and can put a member on probation or open their seat. The Greater Los Angeles region allows up to three substitutes in a rolling six-month period (BNI Greater Los Angeles, Substitutes), and BNI notes that each chapter sets its own substitute policy (BNI, Not All Substitutes Are Created Equal).

How much BNI membership costs

Joining has two parts: a one-time application fee and a participation fee for 12 months or more. Chapters may add a fee for their meeting space. BNI Vermont explains that each region pays royalties to BNI, and that the fees fund member and chapter support, the regional office, training materials, royalties and BNI Connect (BNI Vermont, Where does the money go?).

Amounts are in each region's currency: C$ for Canadian dollars, A$ for Australian dollars.

The Australian regions call the first fee a training and onboarding fee, and the Gold Coast prices apply from July 1, 2026. Renewing can cost less: BNI British Columbia charges C$997 plus GST to renew for a year, against C$1,422 for a new member, and the Lancashire region charges £999 plus VAT.

The national sites of BNI UK, Canada and Australia show no fee on the home and FAQ pages we read. Six Canadian regional sites list none on their application pages either: Alberta North, Ontario Southwest, Ontario Central North, Greater Toronto, Golden Horseshoe and Niagara, and Manitoba. There, ask the regional office for the fees in writing. Check dates too. The San Francisco West Bay page lists $759 for one year but still carries an older note announcing $699 from June 1, 2024.

Other costs on top of membership

  • Meeting room and meals: chapters may charge for their meeting space (BNI Vermont), and San Francisco West Bay tells you to check its monthly facility fee with the chapter. BNI Adelaide CBD and South puts venue costs at around A$40 a week, collected quarterly, and charges separately for specific training, special events, conferences and the annual awards function (BNI Adelaide CBD and South).
  • Training and chapter fees: BNI Mid America lists in-chapter MSP training at $250, in-chapter advanced MSP at $350 and an annual chapter co-op marketing fee of $350 (BNI Mid America).
  • Late fees: $50 at BNI Mid America and C$100 at BNI British Columbia.
  • Refunds: every US region in the table and British Columbia state that fees are non-refundable once you are accepted.

The time BNI takes

BNI says chapters meet once a week for a structured meeting that typically lasts about 90 minutes. Members also follow up on referrals and hold one-to-ones with other members, and that time varies by member (BNI, How Much Time Does BNI Take?).

A one-to-one is an in-person meeting between two members to learn each other's business (BNI, One-to-One tips). A member article on bni.com states that BNI suggests at least one per week (BNI, Growing Your Referrals through One-to-Ones). In the meeting, one or two members give a feature presentation of 5 to 10 minutes (BNI, What Happens at a BNI Meeting). Add the Member Success Program, travel and follow-up. BNI publishes no weekly total, so estimate yours before you apply.

Is BNI worth it? A break-even method

Reviews describe other people's chapters. Use the figures of the chapter you would join:

  1. Cash cost per year: application fee (first year only), participation fee, room or meal fees, and any training or chapter fees.
  2. Time cost per year: hours per week, times meetings per year, times the value of one of your hours.
  3. Break-even: cash cost plus time cost, divided by the gross margin on one closed job. That is the number of closed referrals you need each year.

Gross margin means a job's revenue minus what it costs you to deliver it. Count only jobs from the chapter that you would not have won anyway.

Worked example (hypothetical)

Every number below is invented, except the two BNI fees taken from BNI Mid America's page. A kitchen remodeler joins a chapter for one year.

ItemAssumptionCost for the year
Application feeBNI Mid America$299
Participation fee, 12 monthsBNI Mid America$779
Meeting room and breakfastHypothetical: $20 per meeting, 50 meetings$1,000
TimeHypothetical: 3 hours a week (90-minute meeting, 30 minutes of travel, 1 hour of one-to-ones) for 50 weeks, so 150 hours at $75 an hour$11,250
Total$13,328

Say the average job is $12,000 at a 30% gross margin, so each closed job leaves $3,600. $13,328 divided by $3,600 is 3.7: the chapter must bring 4 closed jobs in the year. On cash alone, one job covers the $2,078 of fees. With $500 of margin per job, break-even climbs to 27 closed referrals, about one every two weeks.

A referred client can be worth more than the first job. A study of about 10,000 customers of a German bank found that a referred customer was on average at least 16% more valuable than a comparable customer acquired otherwise (Journal of Marketing, 2011). If you know your repeat business, add it to the margin.

Questions to ask a chapter before you join

Visitors may attend up to two meetings. Use them to ask:

  1. What will I pay in year one, in writing, including room fees, training and late fees?
  2. How many referrals did the chapter pass in the last 12 months, and how much closed business did members report? Chapters track it as Thank You For Closed Business (BNI Adelaide CBD and South).
  3. How many referrals did the last member in my category receive?
  4. How many members renewed last year, and how long have current members stayed?
  5. Which members serve my clients just before or after I do?
  6. Does the region offer a guarantee? BNI Alberta North gives a free second year to a member who fully engages and doesn't earn more than the first-year membership fee in referral revenue (BNI Alberta North). Get the conditions in writing.

BNI alternatives

A BNI member cannot be in any other program that holds members accountable for passing referrals (BNI General Policies). You pick one group, or you build referrals another way.

LeTip International

LeTip has run business leads groups since 1978, with chapters in the United States and Canada (LeTip). It takes one member per business category, out of more than 400 (LeTip, Why LeTip), and its chapters meet weekly in person, online or in a hybrid format (LeTip, Professional Networking Group). LeTip expects members to attend weekly and to pass, on average, one qualified referral a week (LeTip FAQ). We found no fee on letip.com, so ask a local chapter.

Chamber of commerce referral groups

Some chambers of commerce run referral groups. The Capital Region Chamber, based in Albany, New York, opens its Business Referral Groups to premium-level members, with one member per business type and up to 30 per group. Groups meet twice a month at the chamber's offices, a member may miss three meetings per six-month period, and the chamber estimates a member's time at 2 hours a month. The guidelines mention no separate group fee (BRG Operating Guidelines, September 2025). Ask your local chamber whether it runs one.

Local referral groups and professional associations

Independent leads groups and professional associations set their own rules and prices, so ask them the same questions. To find networking groups near you, use the chapter search of BNI or LeTip, and ask your local chamber which groups meet in town.

Your own paid referral partner program

You can also pay referral partners: clients, suppliers or other professionals who send you leads and receive a fee when the sale closes. Nobody attends a weekly meeting, and if your agreement says so, you pay only on closed sales. Our guides on building an effective referral network and structuring professional word of mouth cover choosing partners and getting clients to refer.

Write the agreement first: who refers, what counts as a referral, the fee and when it is due (see our finder's fee agreement guide). Our guide to referral fee rates by industry helps you set the amount and flags regulated sectors. In the US, RESPA Section 8 bans fees for referring real estate settlement services on federally related mortgage loans, except referral arrangements between real estate agents and brokers (12 U.S.C. 2607).

Referaly is a referral management app for businesses that pay referral partners. It generates the referral agreement, which your partner accepts online. Partners send leads from the iOS or Android app, or from a web form with nothing to install. Referaly tracks every lead, keeps the referrer updated, then calculates and pays the commission. It works in English, French and Spanish.

The Free plan needs no card and covers 5 leads received and 1 referral agreement. Independent costs €49.90 a month excluding VAT, and Agency €79.90 a month excluding VAT plus €9.99 per extra account. Plans carry no commitment, and prices are in euros (see pricing).

Frequently asked questions

How much does BNI membership cost?

It depends on the region. In the five US regions we checked, the application fee is $199 to $299 and 12 months cost $699 to $999, so the first year costs $948 to $1,248. Three UK regions charge £299 or £315 to register and £999 a year, plus VAT. Three Australian regions charge A$2,695 to A$2,915 for the first year. Meeting room or meal fees come on top.

Is BNI worth it?

It is worth it if the chapter brings you enough closed business to cover the fees and your time. Divide the yearly fees, room charges and value of your hours by the gross margin on one closed job: the result is the number of closed referrals you need each year. Ask the chapter for its referral and closed business figures before you join.

How much time does BNI take each week?

Chapters meet once a week, and BNI says the meeting typically lasts about 90 minutes. Members also follow up on referrals and hold one-to-one meetings. BNI's general policies allow three absences in a continuous six-month period, and a substitute does not count as an absence.

Do BNI chapters charge meeting or meal fees on top of membership?

They can. BNI Vermont explains that chapters may charge an extra fee for their meeting space. BNI Adelaide CBD and South puts its venue costs at around A$40 a week, collected quarterly. Ask your chapter for its figure.

Can I get a refund on BNI fees?

Not once you are accepted, in the regions we checked. The San Francisco West Bay, Mid America, Arizona, North Texas, Pacific Northwest and British Columbia regions all state that fees are non-refundable after acceptance.

What are the alternatives to BNI?

Other referral groups such as LeTip International, referral groups run by chambers of commerce, local leads groups and professional associations. You can also run your own referral partner program, where you pay a fee to the people who send you clients who buy and nobody attends a weekly meeting.

BNI fees and policies vary by region and chapter and change over time. The figures here come from the official pages listed below, as read on October 15, 2026. Confirm them with the region or chapter before you pay. This page is general information, not legal advice.
