How much does a broker referral actually pay

This is the sector with the highest share passed on, because the broker's own fee is already a percentage. Here is the full calculation, from the loan amount through to what the referrer receives.

Run the numbers with your own figures

The starting values are an example to show the mechanism, not a market average. Replace them with yours, the calculation updates itself.

What justifies the commission, on the business side: tracking about 10,000 customers for almost three years, researchers measured that a referred customer is on average at least 16 % more valuable than a comparable customer acquired otherwise (Schmitt, Skiera and Van den Bulte, Journal of Marketing, 2011). On the referrer's side, recommending is not neutral either: at a cellular operator, customers who had referred someone saw their defection rate fall from 19 % to 7 % within a year (Garnefeld, Eggert, Helm and Tax, Journal of Marketing, 2013).

Frequently asked questions

Brokerage is regulated, can a referral still be paid?

A simple introduction remains possible, but credit and insurance intermediation is regulated, and depending on what the referrer actually does they may fall under a registered status. Check this with your compliance function BEFORE setting a commission, not after.

Why are the rates higher than elsewhere?

Because the basis is already a commission, not revenue. 30 % of a 1 % commission on a loan is not 30 % of the loan. The calculator above shows that immediately.

Is a written agreement needed?

Yes, more so than elsewhere. It fixes the rate, the basis and the payment moment, and it documents the referrer's exact role, which matters a great deal in a supervised sector.

What if the case falls through?

The usual practice is that nothing is owed until the commission is actually collected. Write it down, it is the point that causes the most friction.
